Along with spinal manipulation, applied kinesiology is one of the most common forms of chiropractic care. The technique is not used on its own but alongside other treatment options – and rather than being a means of diagnosis in itself, it is often used to rule out the possibilities of certain conditions and speed up the overall diagnosis process.

How It Works

Applied kinesiology involves a series of muscle tests performed to gather information on a patient’s health. It encompasses three areas of study - chemical, mental and structural, together known as the Triad of Health – and implies that an issue in one area can have an effect on the other areas.

What Is Muscle Testing?

Muscle testing is based on the body’s internal energy. By testing the body’s response to pressure placed on large muscles, applied kinesiology specialists can observe characteristics about your overall health, including vitamin deficiencies or energy blockages.

Based on muscle testing and other forms of examination, applied kinesiology treatment could involve a number of facets. These include:

  • Manipulation of joints
  • Myofascial and cranial therapies
  • Nutrition and diet recommendations
  • Counseling

Depending on the results of the muscle tests and manual evaluations, your chiropractor or medical professional will recommend the best option or combination of options.

Who Can Do It?

Although often considered a more “basic” form of treatment, applied kinesiology actually requires a great deal of study and skill to master. It requires training and certification above and beyond that of a healthcare professional.

Many chiropractors go on to take training in applied kinesiology because they believe it is the best form of supplementary diagnosis for chiropractic care. They also believe it helps them connect with their patients on a more unique and individual level that many ordinary healthcare professionals overlook.

Is It Right For Me?

Applied kinesiology is not a treatment for everyone - or for every condition - but it can be extremely beneficial. Talking with a chiropractor is the best way to begin a treatment plan. Being open to new ideas and supplementary forms of treatment could be the first step on the path to better health.
