People who play sports a great deal—either professionally or as amateurs—often experience muscle aches and pains.  Sore backs and necks are widespread, and sports injuries are common.  This is why sports medicine has become such a vast medical field.  Along with athletic trainers and physical therapists that focus in treating sports-related injuries, sports chiropractors are specialists who work with athletes of any levels to treat, manage, and prevent musculoskeletal impairments.

Treating Sports Injuries

Chiropractic care is ideal for working with sports-related injuries because it is a drug-free and surgery-free treatment.  This means that following treatment, athletes are typically able to return to their chosen sport sooner than if other methods of treatment had been chosen.

Although not every type of injury can be treated by a chiropractor, sports chiropractors can treat common sports injuries such as sprained ankles, strained muscles, tendonitis in the elbow, and bursitis in the shoulder, for example.  Joint pain issues in the feet, knees, hips, and elsewhere can also be treated by a sports chiropractor.

Preventing Sports Injuries

Many athletes routinely get chiropractic treatments before big sporting events.  By getting these adjustments to their spines, these athletes are preventing injury from happening.

It can be thought of as somewhat like a body tune-up.  Before an important sporting event, the athlete goes to a sports chiropractor for spinal alignments.  This puts his body in condition for the event, which will help it to better keep injuries at bay.

During the event, the athlete is using his body; therefore, his spine may get out of alignment again due to the stress and strain of the sport.  The sports chiropractor will realign the spine after the event has concluded.  This realignment also helps the athlete to build up his strength faster than if he had no realignment.

Widespread Usage of Sports Chiropractors

Sports teams and associations across the world regularly have their team members visit sports chiropractors.  Chiropractors have been a part of the medical crews for some very big sporting events.  Here are some of the most well-known enthusiasts of chiropractic care:

  • The United States Olympic Committee has several sports chiropractors as members of its medical team.
  • The National Football League employs more than a few sports chiropractors.
  • Several recent large sporting events made sure to have sports chiropractors on hand to help the athletes.  These events included the Goodwill Games, the PanAm Games, the Ironman Triathlon, and the New York and Boston Marathons.
