When most people think about chiropractic care, their first image is that of a chiropractor working on an adult’s back or neck. While chiropractors do, indeed, perform this type of procedure quite frequently, this is not the only sort of work that they do. In fact, many chiropractors do not even work with adults at all; instead they decide to become pediatric chiropractors.

There are pediatric dentists, pediatric doctors, and pediatric surgeons, for example, because children need specialized care and need to be treated differently than adults. It is for this very reason that many chiropractors choose to study to be pediatric chiropractors. Chiropractic procedures must be developed according to a patient’s weight and height, among other factors; pediatric chiropractic doctors are experts in developing procedures for children.

When Children Need Chiropractic Care

There can be many reasons why a child may need to see a pediatric chiropractor. Some children are born with spinal issues. Others may experience trauma through a natural birthing process—this can cause cranial misalignment. Parents often have their newborns and toddlers checked out by pediatric chiropractors throughout early childhood simply to help with spinal alignment. Often, visiting a pediatric chiropractor can be helpful with sleeping problems and chronic infections in young children.

Another reason parents have their child visit a doctor of chiropractic is because of trauma. Sometimes after an injury, a child’s spine will be out of alignment. Falls from bike-riding or skateboarding are common reasons for parents to bring their children in to the pediatric chiropractor.

Also, parents may be referred to a pediatric chiropractic doctor if their child is experiencing a long-term condition for which another solution has not been found. Examples of conditions would be allergies, asthma, colic, and ear infections.

How Pediatric Chiropractors Help

Some parents may wonder how pediatric chiropractors can help—especially with conditions that seemingly have nothing to do with the spine. What parents need to know is that the spine protects the spinal cord…and, the spinal cord is what controls the body’s nervous system. The nervous system controls everything in the body—it controls the respiratory, circulatory, hormonal, digestive, eliminative and immune systems.

If the spine is out of alignment, this can make some part of the nervous system out of alignment, so to speak. This is why taking children to see a pediatric chiropractor can help with issues like colic, asthma, and allergies—among many others.
