Sciatica Nerve Pain Relief
The sciatic nerve starts at the pelvis and runs down the back of each of your legs. Many of the muscles in your lower leg are controlled by this nerve, and it is responsible for the feeling in your feet, legs and thighs.
Sciatica is a condition in which you feel pain running up and down the sciatic nerve. Pain is commonly located in the hip and thigh area, but sciatica may also cause lower back pain. The pain is often only temporary (lasting roughly six weeks before resolving) but could be an indicator of underlying conditions.
Sciatica Treatment – What a Chiropractor Can Do For You
Sciatica is commonly caused when the lower spine moves out of alignment and pinches the sciatic nerve. Serious conditions, such as a fall or a herniated disc, can cause this occurrence, but often, simply running, lifting or even just sitting can cause sciatic nerve pain.
A chiropractor can help with this pain in a number of ways. He or she can take a history to determine what might be causing your pain and then use manual adjustments or massage to relieve nerve pain and muscle spasms. These treatments work best when sciatica pain is reported early, so it is best to see a chiropractor at the first signs of pain.
Sciatic Nerve Pain Relief
If you’re unable to see a chiropractor or seek other medical treatment right away, there are things you can do at home to ease sciatica pain. These include:
- Exercise. Moderate exercise can often help ease pain in the sciatic nerve. Be sure to consult a medical professional before starting any exercise program.
- Apply hot and cold treatments. Both hot and cold compresses can help ease the pain of sciatica by relieving pressure and reducing inflammation. Start with a cold pack in the first week, then proceed to hot compresses to help with blood flow.
- Take OTCs. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatories are great for quick sciatica pain relief but should not be used as a long-term treatment plan.
- Sleep and sit well. Firm mattresses and supportive chairs can help keep your spine healthy and can prevent unnecessary trauma to the sciatic nerve.
In some instances, you may not be able to prevent a recurrence of sciatica. However, if you take good care of your health, listen to your body’s pain message and see your chiropractor at the first signs of discomfort, you can minimize the suffering if the condition does arise.
