Chronic knee pain can interfere with your life in numerous ways. It can prevent you from going places with your friends, participating in sports and other exercises, and make your job especially difficult and uncomfortable. Chronic pain is a pain that either doesn’t go away or occurs frequently on a regular basis. There are many reasons why you may be suffering from this affliction. It can be caused by an injury, or it may simply be the result of growing older. Injuries that can result in chronic knee pain affect the ligaments, cartilage, menisci, and bones in and around the joint. Knees are the primary weight bearing joint in the human skeleton and have a very complex design. As a result, they are more prone to injury than any other joint.

Injuries

Knees have ligaments above, below, and inside of them. When they receive minor injuries such as a minor stretching or tearing, it is known as a sprain. The ligament can also tear completely resulting in a serious injury. The meniscus tears often when playing sports. These often will not heal on their own and will require surgery which is known as arthroscopy. Tendonitis is when the tendons become inflamed, usually the result of a strain. These are treated by either cortisone injections or exercise programs. Sometimes when your injury heals, the pain will never completely go away. In other cases, you may not have any pain for years and then all of a sudden it will hurt again and result in chronic knee pain.

Treatment

If you suffer from chronic knee pain, you do have some options. You can, for example, take pain medication. This should help to relieve your pain, but it is not good for you to take every day. Pain killers have been shown to cause stomach bleeding which can sometimes even cause death. If you are seeking a safe, drug-free, homeopathic solution, than you may want to give chiropractic a try. Regardless of what you may have heard, chiropractors are safe and there is no more risk of complication than a regular visit to your family doctor. While it is best to go to a general practice physician to treat the knee injuries themselves, going to a chiropractor can help alleviate any pain that is still bothering you after the injury has been treated and healed. The treatment they provide is cost-effective and generally will cause you no pain.
