New Back Pain Technique Works Without Drugs

For the past few decades, those who suffer from back pain have had to take drugs to remedy their problems.  Fortunately, a revolutionary new technique has been invented that requires no medication, but rather an implant that stops messages being sent to the brain.

An electronic device, known as the dorsal column stimulator is implanted under the skin in the upper hip. It is about the size of a small cell phone.  Using peripheral nerve field stimulation, the implant stops pain signals on their way to the brain.  Pain is actually felt in certain centers of the brain, so by stopping the signals before they get there, the patient does not experience any pain.

The patient has a small remote control to determine the amount of pain that he or she experiences.  The simulator implant can be left in place for 7 to 9 years, until it must be removed, so that the batteries can be replaced.
