Back injuries cost American businesses more than $15 billion and affect more than 1.75 million workers each year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. OSHA estimates that 1 in 5 disabling injuries is a back injury, placing the cost of a single injury at $26,000. Americans are spending millions on medications and surgical procedures to treat back problems when chiropractic procedures offer scientifically validated and more cost effective methods of managing chronic back pain.
In a letter published in the Galway Advertiser, internationally recognized chiropractor Dr. Neil Thompson said, “… chiropractors do not believe that drugs and surgery are an effective way of dealing with health problems caused by chronic stress, poor posture, trauma, over-use injuries, sedentary lifestyles, and poor diet. … according to the latest research, these are the main causes of ‘endemic’ back pain …”
Considering the potentially crippling effects of surgery, most back surgeons today recommend that their patients adopt lifestyle changes in tune with chiropractic philosophy. According to information on the Mayo Clinic website, more than 90% of back problems respond to nonsurgical treatments with complete recovery “within 4 to 6 weeks.” Surgery offers relief in only a minute number of cases and “doesn’t help every type of back pain.” the Clinic cautions.
