Back Pain Especially Prevalent in Pregnant Women
Studies have shown that over 80 percent of pregnant women experience back pain, as early as the first trimester of their pregnancies. This can occur for many reasons, and can be remedied by using precaution, exercising, and visiting a chiropractor throughout the gestation period.
Some of the common causes for back problems in pregnant women are hormonal changes and uneven weight distribution. The hormones released during pregnancy soften the ligaments, to allow them to be more flexible during childbirth. Unfortunately, this also makes the back weaker and unable to cope with everyday stresses to the back muscles. Also, the position of the baby may cause it to lie across crucial nerves, causing pain. Poor posture is also a byproduct of pregnancy, due to the waddling gait, which is characteristic of a growing uterus.
Fortunately, women can seek relief from these unwanted symptoms by doing mild exercise and avoiding physically demanding tasks. Women should refrain from lifting heavy objects and should attempt to stay off of their feet for as much time as possible. Swimming and yoga are good exercise options that allow pregnant mothers to stretch and build muscle strength without straining their backs. And, as with any patient, it is important to see a chiropractor on a regular basis.
